A few days ago, I stopped by a cozy teppanyaki restaurant called Iseji at Ise Market Nigiwai Yokocho near the station for dinner.

* The *Torii* gate located just outside the South Exit of Ise-shi Station. Cross this intersection, and then immediately turn left.

The place was tiny, with seating for only five or six people.

I was drawn to its lively atmosphere and the chef’s impressive skills as he grilled okonomiyaki right in front of me on the sizzling iron plate.

🍽 Mixed Okonomiyaki (Pork, Squid, & Shrimp)

I ordered classic and hearty mixed okonomiyaki (1,000 yen). It was packed with plenty of pork, squid, and shrimp. The chef started cooking it right after I ordered and carefully grilled it for 20 minutes. The okonomiyaki that arrived had a thick, fluffy batter, perfectly crisped on the outside and soft on the inside. The sauce and mayonnaise complemented each other beautifully, and I couldn’t help but savor every bite of this Kansai-style okonomiyaki I hadn’t had in a while. The quality was simply outstanding.

This restaurant doesn’t just serve okonomiyaki − you’ll also find takoyaki, Matsusaka beef yakisoba, Matsusaka beef hamburger steak, monjayaki, teppan miso-grilled meat, and more. They also offer a great selection of drinks and side dishes like pork kimchi and ume suisho (strips of shark cartilage served with dried pickled plum). Next time, I’d love to come back and try those as well − this time with my wife.

Excellent location inside Nigiwai Yokocho, just steps from Ise-shi Station and a short walk from Geku (the Outer Shrine).
A cozy counter setup with the teppan grill right in front of you – full of live-action energy.
Perfectly balanced okonomiyaki with a thick, fluffy base and a crisp, golden crust.
A wide variety of menu options.

If you’re visiting Ise, stopping by Nigiwai Yokocho for some teppan-style dishes between sightseeing spots is a great plan. Next time, I’d love to try their yakisoba and hamburg steak as well.
